Student Athlete of the Month: Nadia Curry

By Stephanie Foster

The essential attributes of an athlete are to never give up, strive hard, and have success. Glenn High School Senior Nadia Curry possesses all those attributes and more. Nadia plays point guard for the Glenn High School Women’s Basketball team. The point guard is a position that is different from all the other positions on the court. You are the ball controller and you help start the plays on the court. As a point guard, you face so many decisions when you have the ball. Nadia might decide to pass it to one of her teammates, or she might use her speed to take the ball towards the basket to make a layup.

The team ended their season with a record of 17-11 overall and 6-4 in the conference. Nadia Curry had a career high of 19 points this season. She led her team to the first round of state playoffs facing Southwest Guilford. It was a tough battle for the Bobcats, falling to Southwest Guilford 49-30. “My only goal for the season was to make it past the first round of playoffs,” said Nadia. Even though her goal was not met, she knows that this season was a good season and it will not be one to forget. The chemistry between the team was unlike any other. They passed the ball fluently and make the shots when they counted the most.

Nadia started playing basketball when she was in 6th grade and has continued playing it through her four years of high school. She spent the first two years of her high school career at Western Guilford and then transferred to Glenn. She has had a few setbacks this year, including an injury that kept her off the court for part of the season. Nadia was able to step back onto the court and hear the cheers of the crowd for the first round of playoffs. Her favorite moment of her high school career was in 11th grade when she had two back-to-back buzzer beaters. Being a student athlete is difficult in high school. You have practice after school until 6 or 7, and then you go home and complete your homework which you might even finish late at night. Nadia Curry has shown great success on the court and in the classroom.

We asked Nadia about her future plans and if they involved basketball. She has her eyes focused on the JROTC program in college. She has been looking at West Virginia, Georgia State University, and University of Alabama. Even though Nadia has no intention of playing basketball in college, it has been a huge part of her life. Now she will close that part of her life and open to an even greater one as she enters into college and the outside world.

The Bobcats may have not advanced through the first round of playoffs, but they will have many opportunities in the next years. And even though the team will miss Nadia’s leadership and strength on and off the court, all eyes will now be set on this Glenn High School Basketball team having an even more successful season in the upcoming year. We wish the Women’s Basketball team good luck throughout its future seasons and we wish Nadia great success with her future plans in college and beyond.
