KLT’s 40th Season Brings Inspired Storytelling, Music, and Wit

By Yvonne Matlosz

Aptly branded ‘REMEMBER WHEN,’ Kernersville Little Theatre’s 2016-2017 season includes a nostalgic nod to “car hops” and “doo wops;” unconditional love for a favorite childhood toy; a comically inclined military medical staff in Korea; and a story of a young boy raised by gorillas.

The season will begin in September with Roger Bean’s Route 66.  Take a dollop of Grease, mix in some Pump Boys & Dinettes, and add a generous dose of Forever Plaid and you get the high-octane fun of Route 66.  Beginning with the sounds of 1950s in Chicago then traveling to the California coast with the surf music of the 1960s, this exciting jukebox revue features 34 of the greatest hits of the 20th century including, “Dead Man’s Curve,” “King of the Road,” “Little Old Lady From Pasadena,” “Beep Beep,” “Six Days On The Road,” “G.T.O.,” “Fun, Fun, Fun,” and many more.

Long before Andy’s bedroom in Toy Story, there was Andrew’s nursery in The Velveteen Rabbit – life begins when humans leave the room!  Adapted by Anita Larsen, this literary classic is routinely named one of the top books for children.  KLT is also excited to announce that this will be the third annual “Bring a Book to Life” project – through donations and community support, every student at Kernersville Elementary will be given a copy of the book and admission to the November show.

M*A*S*H takes the stage in March.  In this wild, free-flowing comedy by Tim Kelley, two Army doctors wage a campaign to get a young Korean to the United States and entered into a good school.  The audience will see many iconic characters – Cpl. “Radar” O’Reilly, Lt. Col. Henry Blake, Captain Burns, “Hot Lips” Houlihan, and Father Mulcahy, plus a few new favorites.  It is all here, including a little romance mixed with dramatic moments and a genuine love of life.

Tarzan swings its way onto the Kernersville stage in June with an unforgettable theatrical experience.  Music and lyrics by Grammy Award-winning composer Phil Collins, Tarzan faithfully re-tells the Disney tale of an orphaned boy raised in the jungle.  It recounts the difficulties Tarzan overcame as he tried to fit in and the dangers he encountered when the worlds of Man and Wild collide.
