Cool Fun in the Hot Sun

Kernersville Parks and Recreation is excited to announce our FREE Summer Movies in the Park Series is returning this month! Summer Movies in the Park is a perfect chance to relax and enjoy a safe and special night under the stars. Come out early to get a good seat and let your kids enjoy games and music before the movie begins. Food trucks (hot dogs and pizza), popcorn, and pretzels will all be available for purchase. Pack a blanket and grab your family and friends and enjoy our family friendly lineup. Our featured presentation for Friday, May 19 will be The Secret Life of Pets (Rated PG). All movies begin at dusk.

For those of you who will not be leaving town this Memorial Day weekend, grab your bathing suits and swim trunks because the unofficial start of summer is upon us. Bring in summer with a splash and plenty of sun. We recommend you pay a visit to your local outdoor pools. On Saturday, May 27, The Town of Kernersville and the Kernersville YMCA will kick-off Memorial Day weekend by celebrating the beginning of the season with Community Day at the Pool. The celebration will take place from 12-2 pm and is FREE to everyone in the community. We will have fun, music, games, FREE pizza, and prizes to celebrate the beginning of summer. Make plans now to be a part of the family fun and help us kick off summer!

The Spring/Summer 2017 issue of the Leisure Guide lists classes scheduled to run from May through August 2017, along with programs and special events including our Story Time in the Park, Summer Camps, the Honeybee Festival, and Independence Day celebration information. For a brief list of new programs see below.

Try our Beginners Acrylic Painting Class with Barbara Fager. She meets once a month to create something new; on Thursday, May 11 she will instruct you on creating “Houses on the Hill.” Go ahead and register, she has everything you need to create a work of art that will last a lifetime. In this monthly class, students will follow step-by-step demonstration and instruction by the instructor in design, color, and application of paint. Join us in creating delightful works of art from beginning-to-end.

Join Twisted Sister Yoga Studio’s experienced teachers for a fun morning of yoga and community in Harmon Park. Each Saturday beginning May 20-August 26 (10 am) and a special Yoga Kids group on Wednesdays, June 14- August 23 (10 am). Please bring a yoga mat or towel to practice on. Yoga combines physical poses that build strength, flexibility and balance, with mindfulness practices that reduce the effects of stress and encourage overall well-being. Students can enjoy these basic yoga classes with teacher guidance and proper alignment instruction, including breathing synchronization.

Yoga for Kids teaches children basic yoga postures and breathing techniques in a fun and interactive format – with lots of games! Children will build strength and increase flexibility. Keep up-to-date with any cancellations online at www.KVParks.com.

The Kernersville Parks and Recreation Department is offering a number of camps this year that include our Summer Day camp as well as a variety of Specialty camps. Please read the descriptions listed for each camp.

Join Coach Rod Pearson (USPTA & USNTA Certified & Triad Area Instructor for 20 years) on the tennis court this summer. Advance your ability to compete and hone your tennis skills at our Mentor Tennis High School & Advanced Summer Tennis Camp.

Coach Rod is also offering a Junior Mentor Tennis Camp for ages 6-14. This camp provides the opportunity to learn and/or improve our junior tennis skills. Each day of camp will build on the different aspects of tennis – from basic strokes to game play, depending on class goals. There is limited space for both camps, so register early.
