Re-Invigorated Classics with KLT’s 41st Season!

By Yvonne Matlosz

Aptly branded Change Is In The Air, Kernersville Little Theatre’s 2017-2018 season includes a nostalgic nod to the North Carolina mountains; a transformative journey to Wonderland; an evolving community in small-town Georgia; and the revolutionary story of our nation’s birth.

KLT will bust out the banjos in September with the fun-filled Smoke on the Mountain, a 1930’s musical comedy set in North Carolina’s Smoky Mountains. This tale introduces the singing Sanders family as they perform their traditional and bluegrass gospel songs for the members of the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church in celebration of their new electric light bulb. Consisting of almost thirty gospel tunes and the rich stories of the Sanders family’s history on the gospel circuit, Smoke on the Mountain is full of laughs and toe-tapping bluegrass as the characters and the audience realize with a little bit of faith and a whole lot of heart, anything is possible. The show’s infectious combination of gospel and bluegrass music will launch the audience into a harmonious sing-along spirit.

Next brings a “curiouser and curiouser” trip down the rabbit hole in the magical tale of Alice In Wonderland. KLT is also excited to announce that this will be the fourth annual “Bring a Book to Life” project – through donations and community support, students at Kernersville Elementary will be given a copy of the book and free admission to the November show.

Second Samuel takes the stage in March. This heart-warming comedy is set in the Deep South during a simpler time in the late 1940s. The Great Depression was quickly fading into memory, the war had been won, the election was over, and “Give ’em Hell Harry” was still president. It had been an exciting time for sure, but the folks in Second Samuel were ready for things to settle down and get back to normal. Except—this was the summer Miss Gertrude passed away, and deep dark secrets were about to be revealed. Nobody could have imagined how the death of one sweet little old lady would turn the entire town upside down, leaving everybody wondering if anything would ever be normal again!

The Tony Award winning 1776 – The Musical blazes its way onto the Kernersville stage in June with an unforgettable theatrical experience. It is the summer of 1776, and the nation is ready to declare independence…if only our founding fathers can agree to do it! Engaging, witty and passionate, this Broadway musical follows John Adams, Benjamin Franklin, and Thomas Jefferson as they attempt to convince the members of the Second Continental Congress to vote for independence from the shackles of the British monarchy by signing the Declaration of Independence. Featuring a funny, insightful, and compelling story along with a striking score, 1776 is a triumphant celebration of the American spirit.
