Modern Living in Kernersville

By Bruce Frankel

Davis Gardens Apartments of Kernersville is a brand-new, uniquely designed independent living, and active lifestyle community for senior adults over 55. Located off Oakhurst Avenue and just a little over a mile from the heart of downtown, this thoughtfully designed and quality-constructed community is being praised by residents and their guests.

“There is a genuine sense of community here at Davis Gardens,” commented Cathy one of the current residents, “Residents know one another’s names and develop relationships. I know I am cared about by my neighbors and I appreciate that the management is available, present, friendly, and involved in the activities of the community.”

When you first walk into Davis Gardens you are immediately impressed with the huge lobby area comprised of several seating areas, a 60-inch community fireplace, indoor resident mailboxes, and a modern coffee bar with a demo kitchen for residents to use free of charge. The wide hallways, with an elevator to access the upper floors, add to the overall spacious feel.

As Mark Smith, the owner of Davis Gardens Apartments, proudly stated, “We want to provide a clean, quality, upscale environment with lots of gathering places and create a great lifestyle at reasonable prices.”

In addition to the universal design which includes barrier-free concepts, all one and two-bedroom apartments contain wood grain laminate flooring, stainless steel appliances, gooseneck faucets in the kitchen with granite countertops, ceiling fans in every room as well as carpeted bedrooms and modern designed bathrooms. Full size washers and dryers are also included in each apartment.

To help make the apartments more energy efficient, a centralized tank-less hot water on-demand system has been installed. Other great features that all apartments have included in the monthly rental rate is an extensive cable package with over 250 channels, wireless internet, and telephone access as well as water and trash expenses.

You will not find a more dedicated and caring community manager than Kelly Willis. “Helping someone find a home is the biggest gift I can give and I love that,” smiled Kelly. “Our residents make us great! And I enjoy every day listening and helping them make their lives better. Our entire team feels the same way and we work hard to make that happen.”

This active lifestyle community affords all residents the ability to do as much or as little as they like. You can choose from the many activities listed each month on the community calendar and participate in fun events such as pizza and paint, movie night, book club, potluck dinners, cookie exchange, bingo, and craft day. The types of weekly activities change and are decided upon at the requests of the residents. Considering this community was not open until July of last year, it is wonderful to see the initial interest kickoff such a wide range of activities, including the fan favorite, ‘Waffle Wednesday’!

With all the public spaces, it is easy for neighbors to meet up for conversation, partake in table games, watch sporting events, or even take advantage of the billiard table in one of the community rooms.

The actual location of the community is a major bonus. The spacious backyard patio, complete with gas grills and a fire-pit, backs up to a peaceful wooded area connecting to a walking trail. The trail meanders through the woods and borders the old tobacco field that is part of the future Kernersville Town Park as well as the proposed area greenway extension. It is not uncommon to see deer and an occasional fox ramble through the tree line.

Of course, with so much open space, this is a pet friendly community that includes a dog park and a convenient and modern indoor pet washing station.

For those who enjoy gardening, there are aboveground galvanized metal garden beds available for both flowers and vegetable plants that residents can plant for themselves.

“We work hard to make everyone feel connected to the community and I am humbled by the amount of referrals and word-of-mouth connections we are getting from our residents,” commented Kelly. “It is wonderful to also see our residents give back to the local Kernersville community as they have recently with our ‘6 Packs for Seniors’ program where we collected meal supplement donations for seniors as well as our participation in the ‘Give a Kid a Coat’ program.”
Kelly, and her skilled and dedicated team, are part of Blue Ridge Companies which manages the community and provides the resources to keep moving the community forward. The Davis Garden’s community resident portal is a great example. Residents can easily view and sign up for calendar events, pay their rent, check their lease, and put in service requests that are all handled within 24 hours.
