Supporting Our Schools

By Chris Comer

Kernersville is where everyone knows your name. The place where we call home is also a place that shows community support like no other. So why would we be surprised that over 30 shops and businesses have decided they are committed to help make a difference in our schools?

On September 8, during Sidewalk Saturday, a portion of your purchase from participating shops and businesses will go directly back into our 13 schools in the form of education grants. The Kernersville Chamber of Commerce collaborates with local restaurants, shops, businesses, and private donors to fulfill grants that our local teachers write.

The grants are for additional opportunities for our children to learn. Teachers are very creative and strive for their students to receive the absolute best learning experiences available. Those experiences can be anything that will benefit the classroom.

This is how it works: A committee of volunteers meet monthly to ensure that the teachers have an application that will highlight all the things the teacher will be able to do to benefit the students. The local restaurants, businesses, and private donors ensure there is support in dollars to fulfill the requests of grants awarded. The committee reads and scores the grants of up to $500. Once the grants are chosen, there is a top-secret date that the group visits the teachers called the Surprise Patrol. During Surprise Patrol visits there is a lot of cheering, high fives, and smiles. The students are ready to use the opportunity as soon as they are awarded it.

The grant may include new books to read, an eLearning opportunity, the resources required to learn about nature, the ability to use objects to learn, and many others extra learning opportunities that are not part of the standard curriculum. The grant requests are endless. learn about nature, the ability to use objects to learn, and many others extra learning opportunities that are not part of the standard curriculum.
