“BEE” OUR GUEST
BY HEATHER WOOD
Mark your calendar for the 2019 Annual Cone Health MedCenter of Kernersville Honeybee Festival which will take place on Saturday, August 17 in Fourth of July Park from 10:00am–5:00pm.
Each year, the third Saturday of August brings a wholesome family event for everyone to enjoy! The Kernersville Honeybee Festival began in 1975 by celebrating the accomplishments of Brady Mullinax, Kernersville’s famous “Bee Man.”
The Kernersville Honeybee Festival is known for its authentic arts & crafts vendors that come from near and far to be a part of this event. As the festival continues to grow, so does the variety of vendors. Today, the festival consists of over 80+ vendors and attracts well over 10,000 spectators. Nestled along the looped pathway of Fourth of July park, vendors include homemade jewelry, bath products, repurposed items, wreaths and more! The Honeybee Festival would not be complete without our honey vendors as well. There will be local honey available, as well as a first hand glance at a live bee hive for spectators to view. We are not only supporting the bee population but educating the community on how important it is to save the honeybee. Visit the Cone Health tent for a brief educational opportunity!
Enjoy live music on the Craige Jenkins Liipfert & Walker LLP stage. Bring a chair and stay for performances all day! The stage is located by the entrance of W. Mountain Street. Every year the festival brings local talent to perform. This year, we will have a great line up including The BrickHouse Band (12:15pm-2:15pm) performing an incredible variety of hits spanning half a century of rock’n’roll, soul, funk, and beach. They combine tight harmonies, a solid rhythm and blazing instrumentalists to create a powerful, exciting and entertaining ensemble.
In the afternoon enjoy the sounds of Jukebox Rehab (2:30pm-4:30pm), a country music band based out of Winston-Salem. Formed in the fall of 2017, “JBR” has quickly made a name for themselves across North/South Carolina as well as Virginia. The group is now positioned to be an up and coming country act to watch. With a unique blend of modern country, the “Keith Whitley” era and everything in between, Jukebox Rehab delivers a perfectly simplistic live show that showcases their Nashville ready originals and exemplifies their southern grown harmonies.
Enjoy throughout the day several demonstrations around the park including, Triad Area Blacksmith’s, Tru Taekwondo, and 100.0 KISS FM personality Keith Allen. The radio station will be hosting a BEAT KISS FM (11:30am-12:00pm). Listeners can go to 100.3kissfm.com/honeybee to sign up for the opportunity to participate in “Beat KISS FM” for their chance to win two tickets to an upcoming event. Each participant will take a turn to listen to a song and name the song and artist. Each round will be more difficult and the last three standing go against the “KISS FM talent on site.” The last one standing will win the tickets.
Miss Mary’s Family Fun Hive will keep the kids entertained throughout the day and is always fun for the entire family! Located in the grassy field off W. Mountain Street in the park there will be carnival rides, face painting, ponies, train rides, and bungee trampoline. Be sure to visit various kid friendly vendor booths and thank our sponsors, including Kernersville Magazine, Farm Bureau – Ashley Davis, Tru Taekwondo and Leap Windows, Doors and More! Stop by the Kernersville Parks and Recreation tent for tickets for the various activities.
Last but not least, treat yourself to the delicious menu options including BBQ, Tacos, Burgers, Pitas, Sandwiches, Wings, Nachos, Funnel Cakes, Fried Oreos, Popcorn, Ice Cream, desserts and more! It is a walker’s paradise in the food court area with mouthwatering treats around every corner.
