Downtown Kernersville This Summer

By Molly Smith

The summer months have begun, and if you are anything like me, you find yourself wanting to spend some time outside and get to know the local area a bit more. After a few long months of extended social distancing, curbside pickups and carryout’s, shops in Downtown Kernersville are slowly opening back up to indoor foot traffic and ready to see some of their favorite customers.

Every second Saturday of the month, the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce’s Downtown Committee hosts its Downtown Sidewalk Saturday from 10 am to 2 pm. The committee has suggested to all the downtown shops and restaurants to open up their doors (while following social distancing and capacity guidelines of course) to the public and encourage foot traffic into our downtown area. The foot traffic allows more awareness of this area and provides an outlet for the community to support their local establishments.

After Downtown Sidewalk Saturday ends, the Old Salem Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club hosts a free Cruise-In where you can enjoy classic cars with the family! The event shuts down the roads so that the cars can line the street from 4 pm- 7 pm. Oftentimes you will find a DJ at this event playing music, baked goods and drinks for sale, and you can still visit your favorite shops and restaurants while it is taking place.

And finally, the Farmer’s Market, provided by the Kernersville Rotary Club, will be present every Saturday under the pavilion near the Town Hall from 8 am to 12 pm. Fresh breads, jams, vegetables, and even homemade items are available for purchase. If you are lucky, one of the vendors will provide you with a honey sample to take with you. The farmers have been looking forward to this all year and while they bring a lot to fill up their space, most of it is gone by mid-morning so show up early!

Be sure to check out the tourist attractions in Downtown Kernersville this summer: Kernersville Museum provides tours around the space and is currently working on an entire village in its backyard, Körner’s Folly does tours around its historic home, and Paul J Ciener Botanical Garden is in full bloom with many programs to enjoy. Please be sure to check out each of their Facebook pages and websites for up-to-date information on reopening days, social distancing guidelines, and more.
