Healthy You, Healthy Earth

By Chris Comer

We live longer than we ever have. Never has it been so important to take care of our bodies and our environment.

The life expectancy of those in the United States has doubled in the past 150 years to 80 years of age. We have so many resources at our fingertips, resources to live a full life, and enjoy every minute in a great environment.

The opportunities are endless: eat well, get enough sleep, exercise, recycle, and reuse. Your community right here in Kernersville is a wealth of information and resources.

For instance, take Healthy Active Adults Day. In its 13th year, the event is held on April 18. Healthy Active Adults Day is for all ages. Health Screenings, vendors, seminars, and entertainment all provide an exceptional experience. Seminars include healthy snacks, estate planning, and more.

Screenings can detect things that you may not have known. No matter what the screening, this is a great way to have a quick check in. It is important to continually take advantage of these services. New this year is the Novant Health Mobile Breast Unit. Mammograms will be done on site for those 35 years of age and up. Contact Rosemary Suess at r.suess@ymcanwnc.org for an appointment.

Seminars afford opportunity to learn about things that are available to you that you may not be aware of. Estate planning is always an interesting topic. With new options and updates it never hurts to listen; even if your estate is planned. Healthy Snacks is also a great subject to take advantage of this year. We hear “healthy” and we think it will not taste good. In this seminar, you will learn how to make delicious healthy snacks that everyone will look forward to eating.

Entertainment is just plain FUN. From singing, to dancing, to a Jazz Band; these are going to make an enjoyable day for all. The YMCA Sassy Seniors will be performing. This is always exciting, please plan to join in on the fun exercise. The Glenn High School Drum Line will be performing as well. With this talented group of students you will be taken back in time with some fabulous music.

New this year is FREE childcare; this will assist those with children and grandchildren. The kids will be having fun while you enjoy the day spending time learning ways to enhance your health. There are also tastings from some of our fabulous, local restaurants.

Not only do we need to focus on our own health, but we need to do our best to support the health of planet earth. Recycle and Re-Use: something that we all like to do on a daily basis. But what should you do when you have a large amount or are cleaning out on a weekend? This is a common question. There are lots of options from events to businesses that take recyclables. One of those options is to bring your paper to shred, batteries, sheet metal (lawn mowers, appliances, Christmas lights etc.), and or eCycling (old cell phones, computers, fax machines, and copiers) to the Kernersville Recycle Day being held on Saturday, April 9.

It is important that we all work together on the longevity of ourselves and our environment. Take advantage of all our community has to offer this month!
