Student Athlete of the Month – Jeremy Gonzales

By Ryan King

The beginning of winter often brings a crisp chill to the air but, for Glenn High Senior, Jeremy Gonzales, this time also brings about a sport that he did not consider trying out for. Near the end of the football season freshmen year, a few of his coaches asked him if he had any interest in trying out for the wrestling team. The 106 pound freshman took advantage of that opportunity. Jeremy has been a devoted member of the Glenn High Wrestling team for four years now. He has played a large role in the success of the program over the last few years. Jeremy’s accomplishments include 118 career wins, 3 time All Conference Wrestler, 2015 Regional Champion, and Lower Weight Conference Wrestler of the Year.

Glenn High School has had its share of notable wrestlers in the past. More recently, Austin Tucker won the 4‐A State Championship last year for 152 pound weight. Austin has been an inspiration for Jeremy and pushed him to strive to reach his full potential last year. From starting off as a 106 pound freshman and now growing into a 126 pound senior, he considers wrestling a big part in his body’s development. “I definitely have grown much stronger and quicker over the past years, and it has really helped me in my wrestling techniques,” stated Jeremy Gonzales.

Being a high school athlete has many advantages such as, making new friends, competing with rivals, and representing your school. It also can have several disadvantages. Late nights of constant homework and studying can get pretty stressful for Jeremy during the season. “I have to juggle school work and practice a lot during wrestling, but I feel that it will help me prepare for life in the real world,” shared Jeremy. When asked what his expectations for the team and for himself were this year, Jeremy stated, “I would love to see my whole team be able to make it to the state tournament. Personally, I would like to have a run at the state title and hopefully win it this year.”

He certainly does not lack the motivation of a state championship wrestler because he can often be found in the weight room in the off season. Despite his recent success in high school wrestling, at this moment he does not plan on continuing his wrestling career after high school. “I have enjoyed wrestling a lot the past few years but I do not think it is the right path for me in the grand scheme of things.” Jeremy plans to attend a culinary school to pursue his dreams of becoming a chef. We wish the best of luck to Jeremy in his last season of wrestling and future endeavors after high school.
