Fall Fun for Everyone!

By Heather Wood

Now that our summer movie series is wrapping up, we can start looking forward to fall events.

With the success of last year’s event, we are happy to announce the return of the “Haunted Movie Night!” Instead of a Drive-In format, we will have an open field, similar to our popular “Summer Movies in the Park.” We polled our Facebook followers and back by popular demand… the October haunted movie will be Hocus Pocus. Kernersville’s Haunted Movie Night, brought to you by Kernersville Parks and Recreation, takes place at Ivey M. Redmon Sports Complex on Friday, October 15. Tickets are $12/per person and on sale now. Ticket includes a goodie bag with candy, promotional items, and a commemorative t-shirt. Shirts are adult sizes only. We also offer a discounted ticket rate for kids 10 and under that includes a goodie bag. You must have a ticket to attend the event. There will be food trucks in attendance, so come hungry. It will be spooky, but not scary, we hope to see you there!

In continuing to capture the Halloween spirit, we are also looking forward to co-hosting the Downtown Trick-or-Treat with the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce, Kernersville Police, and Fire! Join us on Sunday, October 31 from 6 – 8p.m. through Downtown Kernersville. This is a fantastic alternative to door-to-door trick-or-treating. Put on your costume and let the downtown businesses fill your bag with treats! Come out in costume accompanied by an adult for children 13 years old and younger. Watch the streets of downtown become a Halloween haven. The streets will be closed throughout downtown to keep everyone that comes together in a safe environment. Be sure to stop by Haunted Harmon Park and be greeted by ghost and ghouls. Our staff will be there handing out candy to all the visitors.

The fall season also kicks off a new quarter of programming. We have several classes that can get you moving, find your artistic side, or just build new relationships within our community.

Are you thinking of signing up for a yoga class? Then, you are on the right track. Yoga is popularly known for boosting overall health. Yoga is a form of exercise that involves physical, mental, and spiritual beings. It often leaves you feeling better and more relaxed. Contrary to popular belief, yoga is ideal for everyone. Your age, background, health condition, and weight do not matter; you can always take part in yoga. At our facility we offer an All Levels Flow and Power Yoga with Ashley Price on Monday evenings at 5:45p.m. at the Kernersville Community Recreation Center (125 E. Bodenhamer Street). Newcomers often find our All Levels class to be an easier practice. It is slower and less intense, and focuses on a combination of breath and movement.

Power Yoga is a more dynamic version of traditional yoga that is faster, more intense, and the focus is more on building strength and less on meditation or chanting. And while in yoga there is a fixed set of asanas, in power yoga, instructors have more flexibility in terms of arranging postures according to their/class preferences. This class is offered on Mondays at 7p.m. at the recreation center as well.

If you are looking to increase your heart rate, meet new friends, and love dancing, why not try Zumba with Christine? Zumba is a fitness program that combines Latin and International music with dance moves. Zumba routines incorporate interval training – alternating fast and slow rhythms – to help improve cardiovascular fitness. This class is for all levels of fitness, as you work at your own pace. We offer two convenient classes to chose from depending on your schedule. Both classes are held outdoors at the Kernersville Farmers Market Shelter (134 E. Mountain Street). Join us Tuesday evenings at 6p.m. or Thursday mornings at 9a.m.

If you are looking for an affordable, fun, and exciting activity for your child to do this fall, then look no further than our Abrakadoodle Art Classes. This class is all about creativity and kids use their imaginations while using a variety of materials such as paints, wire, clays and more. They explore artists, techniques, world cultures, and more. This class is designed for children 6 -12 years old.
