Financial Focus with Robert

cooperspotQ.  Robert, I watch a lot of financial TV shows.  There seems to be a lot of talk about possible corrections or major pull backs in the stock market.  I am 63 and have recently retired.  How do I prepare for a correction?  I can’t afford another 2008.  – Thomas in Kernersville

A.  That is a great question.  I have talked with many other people who have the same concerns.  Remember it is not if we will have a correction, but it is when the correction will occur.  The first thing you need to do is know what you are invested in and how it works.  You would be surprised at the number of people that have no clue what is inside their investment portfolios.

Ask yourself this question, “How much risk am I actually being exposed to?”  You may or may not be able to answer that question without professional help.  If you need help understanding your risk I would recommend getting a second opinion from a fee only advisor.

Chances are that if you lost money in 2008 and are still using the same type of investments, you will lose again when another correction occurs.  What I am trying to say is, do not wait for something bad to happen and then try to correct it.  Be proactive and take steps now to try to avoid future losses due to stock market corrections or pull backs.
