Have a Super-Powered July with Kernersville Parks and Recreation!
By Heather Wood
Get ready to discover your super powers this July with Kernersville Parks & Recreation and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA)!
In July, Kernersville residents do not need to be bitten by a radioactive spider to discover they have super powers. All that is needed is a visit to our Town’s Recreation Center or a local park.
Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. Created by the NRPA, Park and Recreation Month highlights the vital and powerful role local parks and recreation departments play with their ability to transform lives. From providing places to get fit and stay healthy, to fostering new relationships and forging connections with nature, our close-to-home community parks and recreation facilities provide essential services and greatly improve quality of life.
This year’s event is all about discovering your super powers at a local park or recreation facility. From learning a new skill like gardening, to meeting your fitness goals, your Kernersville Parks & Recreation facilities can have you feeling like a superhero before July is even through. The NRPA and the Kernersville Parks & Recreation Department are encouraging everyone to get out there to experience the power of parks and recreation for themselves.
In Kernersville, you can celebrate this super-powered month by remembering this simple principle…Superheroes begin as normal people. Then, when the time is right, plunge themselves into a journey to become someone more powerful, and to do super-human things through extraordinary dedication, endurance, and will. And, with a little work, everyone can reach their full potential.
Develop your strength by attending one of our classes that will get you in top shape—like Zumba with the Dance Fit Divas on Wednesdays & Thursdays, T’ai Chi on Tuesdays & Wednesdays, Self-Defense with Champions in Motion on Wednesdays, and Anna Carter Fitness Bootcamps on Mondays. You can also drop-in on one of our Adult Basketball, Soccer, or Softball Leagues. Your little Incredibles can hone in on their super-skills through outlets like Basketball Camp in August with Coach Charles Crews, Mentor Tennis Camp with Coach Rod Pearson in July, Self Defense with Champions in Motion on Monday nights, or keep moving in our 8-week long Summer Camp.
All ages can slide from normal into extraordinary thinking in one of our monthly Acrylics Painting Classes, Drama Kids Acting Academy, or Card Making for Beginners.
Kernersville Parks & Recreation believes that whatever your goals are, your BIGGEST super power is TO NEVER GIVE UP.
“July is the perfect time to highlight all the benefits parks and recreation provides right here in Kernersville” said Ernie Pages, Parks Director. “Our local parks and recreation department directly contributes to reduced obesity rates, an improved ecosystem, and increased property values.”
Kernersville Parks & Recreation is leading initiatives and providing opportunities for people to achieve healthier lifestyles, promote and understand nature conservation as well as bringing the community closer through a variety of programs and services. During Week 6, (Camper’s Got Talent—July 25th-29th) our super summer campers will have the opportunity to create their own superhero logos and powers, through engaging activities like crafts and games that will enhance their super-talents.
Nationally, the NRPA is celebrating with a month-long (July 4th-31st) photo contest which includes challenging people to get out to their local parks and recreation facilities to capture the super powers they gain from them. Weekly prizes will be awarded. The contest can be entered via Facebook or by uploading a photo to Twitter and Instagram using #SuperJuly and #SuperParkSelfie.
