Breathe in the Fresh Air, Soak Up the Sunshine

By Heather Chapman

Ah, summer, the sun is shining and the farmers market is an array of color with peaches, strawberries, blueberries and all the summer veggies! Summer activities are underway and the warm weather has everyone grabbing their shorts, bikes and picnics and heading out for the day.

One of my family’s favorite things to do is watch a movie together on the weekends. In the summer, it is even more fun to pack up a few picnic blankets, frisbees, and snacks to go and enjoy a free movie in the local park.

Anyone looking to catch a movie and enjoy the surrounding nature this summer can relax on the lawn in Harmon Park, located at 152 South Main Street in Kernersville. The current schedule of movies includes Minions Rise of Gru on Friday, May 19, Super Pets on Friday, June 16, Moana on Friday, July 21, and The Super Mario Bros. on Friday, September 15. All movies begin at sunset when the movie screen is viewable. Arrive early for food trucks, local business vendors, games, and more! For more information, please contact the Recreation Division at 336-996-3062.

Kernersville Parks and Recreation will be hosting a ribbon cutting ceremony Saturday, May 13, from 9:30AM – 12:00PM, for the opening of the Civitan Fitness Park. The opening ceremony will be held at the park site located at 309 Nelson Street, Kernersville.

The park was renovated with a focus on fitness to encourage the community to embrace health and wellness. The new park features the Novant Health fitness court, ballfield, tennis/pickleball courts, a challenge course, basketball courts, picnic shelters, and the Sona Yalp.

Mayor Dawn Morgan, Town Manager Curtis Swisher, and additional special guests will commence the event with a few words, followed by the ribbon cutting, refreshments, and an opportunity to explore the new amenities. There will be multiple demos going on throughout the event and a chance to snag a FREE commemorative t-shirt and shaker bottle for the first 100 guests.

For more information about the Opening Ceremony contact the Kernersville Parks & Recreation Director, Ernie Pages at epages@toknc.com or 336-992-0804. For a complete timeline of events, visit www.kvparks.com
