GAME ON!
BY HEATHER WOOD
Get ready to get in the game this July with Kernersville Parks and Recreation and the National Recreation and Park Association (NRPA).
Since 1985, America has celebrated July as the nation’s official Park and Recreation Month. Created by NRPA, Park and Recreation Month specifically highlights the vital and powerful role local parks and recreation, such as Kernersville Parks and Recreation, play in health and wellness, and social equity efforts in communities all across
the country.
This year, it is all about highlighting the fun, games and exciting offerings at your local parks and recreation center. From providing special events to exciting sports leagues and everything in between, Kernersville Parks and Recreation has a wide variety of programs that are not only fun, they also bring the community together. NRPA and Kernersville Parks and Recreation are encouraging everyone to get out there and get in the game in their own way.
Celebrate Park and Recreation Month as Kernersville Parks and Recreation invites everyone to join us for “Game On” by enjoying a month’s worth of fun events!
MOVIES IN THE PARK
One of the most loved events of the summer is here… It is time for the Movies in the Park to be held on Friday, July 19 in Harmon Park! The event will kick off at 6:00 p.m. with food trucks, vendors, games and giveaways. We will be showing The Lego Movie: The Second Part and it will begin at dusk. Food will be available for purchase from HomeSlice Pizza, Kona Ice, Patriot Pretzel, and popcorn sold by the local girl scouts. You can also quench your thirst with samples of Cheerwine being offered by 100.3 KISS FM.
The event is sponsored by Kernersville Parks and Recreation, Northstate Communications, Cone Health, and Jeffrey Hutchins Law Firm. In the event of rain we will move the location to the Kernersville Farmers Market Shelter if lightning is not detected. Harmon Park is located at 152 South Main Street. Parking is available at the old Kernersville Library, Town Hall, and additional downtown parking is available. Gather your family to the park and get ready for games, grub, contests and a cool flick with us! For more information visit www.kvparks.com.
FOURTH OF JULY CELEBRATION
July marks the halfway point of summer, which means you need to get ready for your Independence Day celebrations. In the United States, Independence Day or the Fourth of July is a national holiday that marks the anniversary of the country’s independence from Great Britain. Traditionally, many people celebrate this day with picnics, parades, and fireworks, and you can join in the celebrations however you like.
Kernersville July 4 evening celebrations begin at 6:30pm- 10:30pm hosted by the Town of Kernersville and the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce. Bring your lawn chair, blanket, family and friends to the Kernersville Raiders football field for a FREE fireworks celebration; complete with live music starting at 6:30pm! The sky will light up around 9 pm in a spectacular display of our nation’s independence!
NEON CARNIVAL
On Tuesday, July 23 we are partnering with On-Target DJ to host a “Neon Carnival” at our Community Recreation Center from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Once we turn out the lights everything will be aglow. Guests attending can expect a carnival experience in a glow-in-the-dark atmosphere with fun for the whole family! With the use of glow necklaces, glow sticks and other items that illuminate under black light, party guests can play games that they would play in a brightly lit setting. This event is FREE and our main goal during Park and Recreation Month is to promote this great opportunity and other resources that we provide. We want to let the public know that July is a great time to get out and see all the incredible things that are happening in our community. For more information about this event visit our Facebook page. We will share videos and more details to come!
INSTAGRAM CHALLENGE
Do you have Instagram? Have you ever been a part of an Instagram challenge? Well here is your chance! During the month of July, Kernersville Parks and Recreation wants you to get involved and participate in our challenge for a chance to win cool swag. An Instagram challenge is when you create a photo prompt for each day over a certain span of time and invite others to participate with you. Throughout the month we will also provide bonus opportunity challenges to increase your chances to win. The details of the contest will be revealed by following our handle on Instagram @kvparks125.
