Professional Customization & Conservation

By Amber Mabe

Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, “A house is made with walls and beams; a home is built with love and dreams.” For many, home ownership is a dream of a lifetime, and one that looks different for each person. Whether it be preserving or restoring an older home full of generations of memories, transforming a fixer-upper into a custom home, or making remodeling visions a reality, Brian Ward and his team at Ward Construction and Remodeling of North Carolina have been helping clients turn houses into homes all across the Triad.

From a young age, Brian knew he enjoyed working with his hands and finding creative ways to make repairs and improvements. These skills led him to start working on cars in high school and into his college years. After a successful military career in the US Marine Corps, including deployments to both Iraq and Kuwait, Brian felt his heart being drawn back to a career of working with his hands. For many years, he found satisfaction by continuing his work as a vehicle mechanic, achieving the title of master technician. Eventually though, he found fulfillment in the realm of real estate, where he began buying properties and performing much of the construction work himself. Brian obtained his general contractor’s license as his list of investment properties began to grow. His initial dabbling in real estate and construction soon blossomed into a full-time career and continued to expand until it became necessary to bring on an additional staff of qualified people to keep up with the demand. Together with Brian’s new team, Ward Construction and Remodeling of North Carolina was established in 2018.

One of these original team members was Operations Manager Jason Marks. With more than twenty years of construction and remodeling experience, Jason’s craftsmanship skills and expertise add an extra level of quality and professionalism to Ward Construction. “He has been with us from the very first day,” says Brian, recalling how he knew he wanted Jason’s involvement in the company from the very beginning. “He is a very big part of our success.” Jason specializes in projects that require custom designs and innovative solutions.

Operations Manager Van Bateman joined the team later that same year, bringing with him an enthusiasm for taking on new challenges and a desire to learn more about the construction business. “Van is a smart guy and a solution-finder,” says Brian. “I can hand him a project and not have to worry about overseeing it.” Van says he enjoys being part of a company that is goal oriented, family oriented, and always looking for ways to move forward and improve their product. “What I have really enjoyed about construction is seeing the happiness and excitement from customers when a project is completed,” says Van.

Together with the rest of the Ward Construction crew, Brian and his project managers have taken on a wide variety of projects across the Triad, from historical renovations to small home remodeling projects. Some of their most notable projects include contributing to the large-scale renovation of historical mills into luxury apartments, roof and chimney work on the beloved Kernersville Museum, and the current restoration of a long-standing landmark hotel in Danbury. Ward Construction has played a big part in the revitalization of Winston-Salem’s character-filled, historic West End, one of the oldest parts of the city that has transformed into a destination for not only beautiful homes but also trendy restaurants and shops. Although fully licensed for any project ranging from small remodels to new builds to commercial renovations, Brian says Ward Construction has really found its niche in restoring older homes and tackling creative customization projects. Brian says the challenging, problem-solving nature of what he does is his favorite part of the job. “There is always something new to keep things interesting,” says Brian. “We learn the customer’s vision, and then we get to find the solution on how to make it happen, whether that be structural modifications or cosmetic work.”

This reputation for innovative thinking has drawn clients from all over the Triad to choose Ward Construction for their home remodels and renovations, contributing to the coining of the company’s slogan: “Let us make your home a custom home.” Brian and his team have helped clients bring their home visions to life with their ability to turn the most ordinary of houses into customized dream homes. Their ability to preserve the character and history of older builds while creating comfortable and stylish living spaces continues to set them apart from other builders. Homeowners have nothing but praise for the team at Ward Construction, whether it be a simple bathroom remodel or major structural repairs. One such satisfied customer is Cathy Ayers. Cathy says she highly recommends Ward Construction because of their attention to detail and professionalism. “They remodeled our garage into a beautiful apartment. The workmanship was outstanding, and we receive many compliments. Ward also remodeled our patio into a wonderful living space with a swim spa. The details were not overlooked,” says Cathy. “They worked with us as we went along with any updates or changes. They were very accommodating. The team was very professional and knowledgeable. After the large projects were completed, they were still available for small projects.”
